Tell us about your craft, do you have a special method or use particular materials that set you apart?
I am the Creative Director for Ansea – a women’s sustainable lifestyle and surf brand. I like to work with materials that are made from recycled or regenerated products or plant based materials that have an end of life timeline. I am currently designing into Econyl (a nylon created from regenerated fishing lines found in the ocean) and Yulex (a plant based alternative for wetsuits). I also enjoy using sustainable fabrics for our ready to wear clothing.
When and how did you get started?
I knew at a very young age I wanted to be a designer, so I started modeling at 15 to get a perspective in the industry. I went to FIT in New York and started my own line a few years later. I had a big break with the television show GossipGirl. They featured my collection as the ghost designer of Eleanor Waldorf.
Where did you grow up? Do any aspects of your early life influence your current work?
I grew up on Amelia Island, FL. The Ansea brand is created for women who love the water, so I am very influenced by growing up on an island. My world consisted of boating, sailing, fishing, surfing, swimming; we were always on the water. It was almost as if it became a part of me. I remember the first time I flew inland, I got off the plan and immediately felt anxiety that I could not see water. It is funny how those things just get integrated into our being.
What is your motto?
“Choose a job you love, and you will never have to work a day in your life.” Confucious
I know it is cliche, but I still appreciate this.
What is your idea of perfect happiness?
Listening to and following my heart.
Which living person do you most admire?
Michelle Obama
What keeps you inspired?
Nature and meditation. Movement. Being close to water.
